Decorate A Bra Fundraising

McAllen, TX: South Texas students, along with Valley residents, used their creativity as a weapon to fight breast cancer in the Rio Grande Valley. KNAPP Medical Center created the “Design for a Cure…Bras Ending Breast Cancer” competition to raise funds and community awareness about the importance of mammograms. The “competition was a fundraising event with the ultimate goal of providing free mammograms to Valley women who aren’t able to afford one. It also created awareness by asking members of the community to ignite creativity by submitting a tastefully decorated bra for the competition. The works of art were to follow a theme and have a name representing what ‘the fight against breast cancer’ signifies to them. STC students expressed their interpretations with twigs, glitter and glue.

Members of the Mid-Valley Campus Biology Club designed butterfly ‘Wings of Hope’ for those who have been diagnosed with the disease. Other students cleverly imbedded working clocks to symbolize that it is never too late to have a mammogram.  The 91 bra entries submitted were displayed at KNAPP Medical Center throughout the month of October. Everyone was invited to vote for their favorite submission either in person or online. Each vote required a $1 donation, which, with entry fees, was used towards the funding of free mammograms.
