Paint Your Parking Spot

The seniors at Farmington High School, Farmington, Missouri, have found a unique way of fundraising while having some fun at the same time. For $25, a senior could buy the right to paint a design, a picture, a mural or something they thought reflected their own personality on their parking spot. The asphalt of the senior parking lot became a blank canvas for them. “We thought this was pretty cool way of helping raise money for prom and project graduation,” said senior class president who helped spearhead the project. “Since the school will be tearing up the parking lot soon for the new gym, this was the perfect time.”

DIY parking spot fundraiser

For those who were participating, the excitement of being able to paint their parking spot literally spilled over on to the lot. For one senior, her spot will no longer be old, gray and oil stained. She has decided to paint her spot to look like a beach with water coming up over the sand. Another senior enlisted her dad’s help and they spent a Sunday afternoon painting her space a very bright pink, and for this senior, the inspiration came quite easy. “I’m a princess, so my spot is going to say Princess Parking: All others will be toad,” she said. “I was pretty excited when I heard about being able to paint our spots because no one else has ever been able to do it.”

This DIY project works best if, as in this example, the parking lot is going to be torn up for some reason, whether it be an expansion or just a new parking lot. It would also work if the parking lot is just going to be re-sealed. This project can even help pay for the coming expansion, new parking lot or can be used to raise money for another good cause. Businesses and churches, etc. might also benefit from this idea.

We have included a number of do-it-yourself fundraising ideas in this section that offer a break from traditional product sales.  They were developed by groups just like yours in an attempt have a little fun with their fundraiser. Some of them are tried and true while others show a lot of creativity ... and even wackiness in some cases.  All of them are obviously not appropriate for every group, but sometimes, with only a little modification, your might find some fund raising ideas that are perfect for your group. If you have an idea for a do-it-yourself fund raiser you are willing to share with others, please send it to us via email. Include anything and everything you would want to know if you were hearing the idea for the first time.
