Do-It-Yourself
Fundraiser Of The Month
Ice Melt:
Every winter
in Whistler, British Columbia, a barrel is placed out on a
frozen Alta Lake and residents
purchase tickets, filling in the date and time when they think the ice
will melt and the barrel will fall in. When spring comes and the
barrel floats past a certain point, the person who guessed the closest
time wins. The proceeds are split 50-50 between the Alta Lake School
and the lucky guesser. Alternative:
The Kiwanis Club of Janesville, Wisconsin
holds an annual Truck on Ice fund-raiser to benefit local charities.
Participants purchase tickets to record their prediction on when
the shell of a Chevrolet Suburban placed on a lagoon will break
through the ice and sink into the water. A
clock installed in the vehicle records the exact moment at which the
Suburban submerges, allows Kiwanis members to determine the fundraiser
winners. |

SpayGeorgia,
Inc. is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to
promoting humane treatment of all companion animals.
Their goal is to reduce the number of
unwanted dogs and cats in Georgia through spaying and neutering.
To accomplish this goal, SpayGeorgia provides
low-cost spay/neuter certificates and a variety of education
programs. More than 105 veterinary clinics in Georgia have
generously agreed to provide spaying and neutering services at a
substantially reduced cost. To reduce the cost even further,
SpayGeorgia subsidizes part of the veterinarian's cost. The end
result is that pet rescuers and caretakers who need financial
assistance can have their pets spayed or neutered for about half
of the normal cost. |

Interesting or Fun Facts
Albert J. Parkhouse created a coat hanger in 1903, in response
to co-workers’ complaints of too few coat hooks. He bent a piece of
wire into two ovals with the ends twisted together to form a hook. His
employer, Timberlake Wire and Novelty Company, thought it was a good
idea and took out a patent since in those days, companies were allowed
to take out patents on any of their employees’ inventions. Timberlake
made a fortune; Parkhouse never got a penny. In 1935, Elmer Rogers
created a hanger with a tube on the lower bar which is still used
today. |
