Do-It-Yourself Fundraiser Of The Month

MONOPOLY® Tournament: Design your tournament to "fit" your organization and potential supporters.  Most organization charge an admission fee for individuals and/or teams. Don't forget the possibility of business supporters who can sponsor specific spaces on the board.  Most tournaments are conducted on a set time limit basis.  Contact Hasbro for a free Game Tournament Kit that contains a description of the program, registration form, score sheet, style guide and other pertinent information. The guide not only provides the basic instructions for hosting a tournament, but also offers some helpful suggestions. Hasbo offers groups complimentary MONOPOLY® games for use in their tournament, as well as three other games for prizes.

Tsunami Relief: The news is full of reports about the massive amount of donations pouring in from around the world to aid in tsunami relief efforts. There obviously isn't enough room to spotlight everyone so we decided to recognize school kids who are doing their part by organizing penny drives. These are just a few: Horace Mann School, Melrose, MA; Magnolia Elementary, Oakdale, CA; St. Mary School, Leland, MI; Chapin Middle School, Chapin, SC; Fred S. Engle Middle School, West Grove, PA; Cape Christian School, Cape Girardeau, MO; College Park Elementary, Ottawa, ON; Sam D. Bundy Elementary, Farmville, NC; Hall-Halsell Elementary, Vinita, OK; Washington High School, Princess Anne, MD; and Madison Elementary, Mount Vernon, WA. Interesting or Fun Facts

Life Savers were invented in 1912 by Clarence Crane, who had been making and selling chocolate candy in the Cleveland area since 1891 and thought to augment his product line with a non-melting candy during the summer when chocolate sales were slow. Crane envisioned a round, flat peppermint and hired a pharmaceutical pill maker to press his new mints into a circle and punch a hole in them. It was their shape that inspired the name — they looked like life savers, so Life Savers they became. What we now view primarily as a sweet was back then marketed as a breath improver: the original product packaging pictured an old seaman throwing a life preserver to a young female swimmer with the slogan "For That Stormy Breath."  [Source: Barbara Mikkelson, Urban Legends]
