Do-It-Yourself Fundraiser Of The Month
A
Spirit Chain is a great fundraiser for high school
students, but could be used with other groups. Have a competition
within the different classes in the school (senior, junior, sophomore,
freshmen) to see who has the most school spirit. Each class has two
colors that their paper chain consists of. Sell each strip of paper
for 25 or 50 cents. Keep the chains hidden and then at an assembly
have class representatives bring out the huge paper chains that have
accumulated over time. Which ever class’ chain is the longest receives
bragging rights for the rest of the school year. This is a great
activity to do right before homecoming or other school functions when
school spirit is high. The only thing you have to pay for is the paper
and staples/glue/tape. |

Non-Profit In The Spotlight
When a child loses a loved one, who do they turn
to? What feelings go through their young minds? What can we do to help them in
their grieving process? To help answer these questions, Baptist Trinity Hospice
created
Camp Good Grief, the Mid-South's first children's bereavement camp. The goal
of the free annual bereavement camp is to give area children - ages 7 to 12 - an
enjoyable, accepting and supportive environment in which they can freely express
their feelings about the loss of a loved one. Under the guidance of professional
bereavement staff, campers have the opportunity to meet with other children who
have experienced similar losses, and to engage in activities involving art,
music and recreation through which they can explore their grief. Support groups
are also a part of the day camp, enabling the children to explore their grief.

Fun Pasta Fundraising:
"Being the Fundraising Director for the Glen Allen Ravens is like
having a full time job. Choosing the right product and making sure it
could be profitable was very important to me. With over 400 football
players and cheerleaders, I had to think of something that was unique,
fun, and of course, profitable. My organization sold close to $20,000.
Let me save you hours of searching on the internet for the right
fundraiser for your organization. My experience with The Pasta Shoppe
was A #1!" Dondi W., Glen Allen, VA |

Interesting or Fun Facts
Beetle Bailey,
created by Mort Walker, is among the oldest comic strips still being
made by the original creator, and remains among the most popular comic
strips today. In 1948 and 1949, Walker submitted his comics to the
Saturday Evening Post whose editor suggested he draw some comics in a
college setting. Walker did so and featured one character, who wore a
hat down over his eyes, whom he named Spider, after a fraternity
brother. Walker then decided to do a comic strip about college,
putting all of his fraternity brothers in it and changed the name from
Spider to Beetle. During the Korean War, Walker had Beetle enlist in
the Army. All characters other than Beetle were dropped, and new ones
created. The strip became the focus of feminist animosity in the 1990s
because of Gen. Halftrack's unrestrained (if ineffectual) libidinous
approach to women. Reacting to this, Walker put the General through a
bit of sensitivity training and dressed Miss Buxley more
professionally.
