Do-It-Yourself Fundraiser Of The Month
One Elk's Lodge variation
on a fundraising raffle is to have a Raffle
Table of donated items.
Members donate new items they have received
as gifts but don't want, things they have made with their special
talents (i.e.- hand-made jewelry, baked goods, clothing, etc.), items
donated from local businesses, and certificates for free admission to
future lodge events or services (such as baby sitting or
house-cleaning). The items are on display during a
charity
fundraising dinner. During the cocktail hour
and dinner, they sell tissue paper bags that
either contain a number or a novelty prize (usually chocolate
candies). They plump up the bags with filler
material such as shredded paper to disguise the contents. The bags are
sold for $10 each. At a specified time the bags are opened and the
people with numbers get to choose from the prize table in order of the
numbers. The others get to enjoy their chocolates.
They try to limit the number of bags so people have a good
chance of winning a prize. They always sell
out of the prize bags and are able to raise several hundred dollars
for their chosen charity using this
technique.

Non-Profit In The Spotlight
Camp Smile-A-Mile's
mission is to provide year round challenging,
unforgettable recreational and educational experiences for young
cancer patients, their families as well as young adult survivors
from Alabama at no cost. Our purpose is to provide these
patients, families and survivors with avenues for fellowship, to
help them cope with their disease, and to prepare them for life
after cancer. These
special children
are able to participate in a normal
camping environment while remaining under medical supervision.
Before Camp SAM, many children were not able to go to a
sleep-over camp because they were undergoing chemotherapy. Now
every child up to age eighteen who is a current or former cancer
patient can go to camp through our program. Qualified medical
personnel stay at the camp during each camping session. They
administer chemotherapy as well as take care of all the first
aid needs of the campers. |
