Do-It-Yourself Fundraiser Of The Month

Kiss The Pig:  Get people in your organization to go on the auction block and have people contribute money to the person that they would most like to see kiss a pig (goat, cow, etc).  The person with the most money in their jar will have to pucker up.  While the two are lip-locked take pictures to sell to the friends and family members of the lucky winner.  Variation: Teachers and staff at your school who agree to take part in the Kiss-A-Pig has a jar placed on his or her desk.  Then students put pennies in that jar if they would like to see that person kiss the pig.  If a student does not want to see that teacher kiss a pig they would put in silver coins and that would put them in the negative zone.  The one with the most pennies (less silver) would have to kiss the pig.  As a reward for the teacher, they receive a dinner for two at a nice restaurant.

Fundraising Spotlight   Far West Wheelchair Sports (FWWS) was founded on the philosophy that people with disabilities share the same desire and capability for attaining athletic excellence and physical fitness as do their able-bodied peers, and that these needs are best met through comprehensive sports programs which allow each person to achieve his or her own athletic potential. Today over 100 members are active in FWWS and it is estimated that there are over 5000 wheelchair athletes taking part in organized sports competition throughout the United States alone. Any individual, junior or adult, with a permanent physical disability, who is unable to take part in regular athletic competition, is eligible to participate.

Interesting or Fun Facts

In 1943. during World War II, Richard James, an engineer in the United States Navy, was on a new ship's run. As he worked, a torsion spring suddenly fell to the floor and the spring flip-flopped. When he returned home, he and his wife Betty perfected a long steel ribbon tightly coiled into a spiral and began production in 1945. From that spring's accidental fall came the Slinky, a toy Americans have enjoyed for over fifty years. The non-electrical, no-battery-required, non-video toy has fascinated three generations of children and adults alike. The only change in the original design has been to crimp the ends as a safety measure. Trivia: The U.S. Post Office issued a Slinky stamp in 1999; during the Vietnam War, U.S. soldiers would toss a Slinky into a tree for use as a makeshift radio antenna; and, if stretched end-to-end, the Slinky toys sold since 1945 (about 250 million) would wrap around the world 126 times.
