Do-It-Yourself
Fundraiser Of The Month
Goat Insurance: Hold
a "goat insurance" fund raiser that people can't resist because
they can't stop laughing. Flyers are mailed to your membership
and/or other groups to announce that your organization will
raffle off a donated goat. For $10, a person can send in the
names of three people. Letters are then sent to those three
people, telling them they have a chance to win a goat. But, for
$10 they can buy "goat insurance" to protect themselves from
being entered in the raffle. The winner of the raffle does get
the goat, but after the fun wears off, the goat's returned to
its owner. |

How to
Write Successful Fundraising Letters
by Mal Warwick
According to this
practical handbook, a "fundraising letter is like a personal visit."
Writing from extensive experience in guiding companies and
organizations through fund-raising efforts, Warwick offers detailed
advice and analysis along with copious examples and instructive case
studies. Warwick, who is both personal and hard-hitting, suggesting
a cross between a preacher and a salesman, views fund-raising by
mail as a three-stage process. "First, donors are acquired....Then,
they are converted into repeat donors...finally donors may be
upgraded into higher levels of generosity and commitment." The
well-organized instructions include the planning of whole campaigns,
the phrasing of appeals, composition and punctuation, information
packets, and follow-up. In a time when fund-raising is perquisite to
nearly all professions and organizations, library managers of all
types as well as library users should find this both fascinating and
worthwhile.
You can find a copy at Amazon.com for
less than $19.00. |

In 1917, there was this
salesman named Edwin Cox who sold the newly invented aluminum cookware. He was so unsuccessful
at selling this junk, that he decided that he needed a gimmick.
From his years as a pot salesman, he knew that a major
complaint was the way that the food stuck to the pans. He concluded
that what was needed was something that combined the abrasive nature
of steel wool with the cleansing ability of soap. In his kitchen, he
hand dipped steel wool into soapy water and let it dry. He then
repeated this until the steel wool could hold no more. The idea
worked. More housewives let him through the door and more pots were
sold. Each woman received one free sample. He then ran into a
problem. The women wanted to purchase more pads, not pots. (continued) |
