Walter H. Deubner, a grocer from Minnesota, can take credit for the invention of the shopping bag. When he saw people were constrained from buying groceries in large quantities because of their inability to carry in bulk, he came up with the idea of a prefabricated paper bag with a cord running through it. Called the deubener shopping bag, he sold over a million bags in a single year. That was the beginning of the shopping bag and ever since then paper bags have always been popular.
