Do-It-Yourself Fundraiser Of The Month
A
Cardboard Boat Race is a common school-spirit
competition for students of high school and college age,
or for any group as part of a community festival. An
entry fee is charged for each "boat".
A typical competition format
allows competitors a fixed build time, using only a predetermined
number of cardboard sheets, glue, adding machine tape, and paint. Duct
tape is also often a key ingredient. Once completed, teams must race
their boats across a shallow pond or river, using similarly
constructed oars. The boats will almost always flood, sink, or shred
under the weight, mostly due to the difficulties of waterproofing
cardboard. Awards are often given out for effort and spirit, instead
of victory.
Some offer two categories - Fast
and Funny. Boats are inspected pre-race to determine if they are
"fast" or "funny". The funniest boat winner gets a prize regardless
of speed or floatability! Life jackets
are required for all participants.

Non-Profit In The Spotlight
The
Children's Organ
Transplant Association exists to assist patients who
require a life-saving organ, bone marrow, cord blood or stem
cell transplant. We work with any patient who needs a
transplant due to a genetic disease, and all patients 21 and
younger for any disease or complication.
We guide the family and their volunteers through every
step including: organizing and training the campaign committee,
planning successful events and activities, working with the
media, and finding multiple sources of funding.
As you know, there will be expenses before and after the
transplant that may not be covered by the families insurance.
Remember, fundraising is usually more successful before the
transplant occurs, when the situation is a matter of life or
death. To make the most of their
efforts, funds raised by local community members will be
deposited into the account we set up at a local bank or sent
directly to our national office. This will not impact the
patient, or their family, from income tax liabilities or any
governmental assistance program such as Medicaid. This allows
patients to capitalize on the advantages we
offer, including the potential for up to a $10,000
match. The family can focus attention on their patient while we
serve as the "bill payer" from the fund.
