Interesting or Fun Facts
The Barbie doll
was invented in 1959 by Ruth Handler (co-founder of Mattel), whose own
daughter was named Barbara. The doll was intended to be a teenage
fashion doll. Handler took her idea to the ad executives at Mattel
Corp., the company that she and her husband had founded in their
garage. The (all-male) committee rejected the idea as too expensive,
and with little potential for wide market appeal. Mattel finally
agreed to back Handler's efforts and the Barbie doll debuted at the
American Toy Fair in New York City in 1959. Buyers at
the Toy Fair were not impressed, but little
girls certainly were and the Barbie doll took retailers by storm. The
Barbie product line is the most successful in the history of the toy
industry. The Ken doll was named after Ruth's son. There has been some
controversy over Barbie's figure when it was realized that if Barbie was a
real person her measurements would be an impossible 36-18-38.
