Do-It-Yourself
Fundraiser Of The Month
Thons: There is an
appropriate "thon" event for every organization. While events
vary widely, the basic means of raising funds is pretty much the
same. Participants collect pledges from family and friends -
either a flat fee or so much per "x" that they complete during
the event. Companies may also sponsor the event - especially if
it relates to their business. Organizations often make
additional funds selling refreshments, advertising and
souvenirs. Thons are not limited to athletic events. Bowl-a-thon,
math-a-thon, swim-a-thon, bird count-a-thon, read-a-thon,
weed-a-thon, talk-a-thon, canoe-a-thon, art-a-thon, cut-a-thon,
and a skate-a-thon are just a few that other groups have held. |

Comparison of
National School Fundraising Programs
Many schools are taking advantage
of the three largest national programs to supplement their
budgets by collecting proofs of purchase from Campbell Soup,
General Mills and Tyson's Foods. (Newsweek).
|
Labels
for Education: Campbell's has given out more than
$100 million since 1973. |
Pros:
Earns points on more than 1,000 products; no limit on
how much a school can earn. |
Cons:
Campbell's doesn't give out cash. Labels are traded for
school supplies - VCR's to basketballs. |
|
Tyson
Project A+: The baby of the big three, founded in
1999, has only given out $35,000 so far. |
Pros:
Schools can earn 24 cents per label - up to $12,000
annually. |
Cons:
Tyson only has a few dozen eligible products. |
|
Box
Tops for Education: In just six years, General Mills
has given out $70 million. |
Pros:
Schools can earn up to $60,000 per year on 800 products. |
Cons:
It takes a lot of box tops to hit that maximum since
each is just worth 10 cents. |

Skratchers Cards: Team raises over $2,000 in profit! Like
most teams, The Norwalk Mariners Girls fast-pitch teams would
rather focus on playing than fundraising. "Our girls stepped
up to the plate and raised over $2,000 profit last fall using
the Skratchers fundraiser. What a great relief! We got fully
outfitted with new equipment, and the players are receiving
full uniforms, without the parents having to pay hundreds of
dollars." Richard S. Kurtzman, Norwalk Mariners. Get a

Interesting or Fun Facts
As is often true, necessity is clearly the
mother of invention, and this was so
with the BAND-AID. In 1917
Earl Dickson married Josephine
Knight. Josephine was a lovely woman but a bit clumsy in the
kitchen. Earl came home each evening to a wife who prepared a
wonderful dinner but often had nicks and burns on her hands. The
conventional bandages of the time were too big and clumsy so it was
difficult to treat her injuries. Earl, being a creative individual,
affixed sterile gauze to the center of surgical tape so his wife could
unwind and cut off what she needed. Thus, the Band Aid was born. Earle
worked for the Johnson and Johnson Company
which was already in the business of making
large cotton and gauze bandages for hospitals.
Dickson told his boss about his invention and the BAND-AID was born.
