Do-It-Yourself Fundraiser Of The Month
Animal Photos:
Kids of all ages love to have their photos taken with animals
(usually the more exotic the better, but who can resist puppies and
kittens), and parents have a hard time resisting because they are so
very cute. If you have any animals that are very friendly with people
and can take a half day or so of camera flashes, get a local
photographer to donate professional photo services, and set up at a
mall or other event. Be sure to keep a true animal lover around to
handle anything that gets unruly. The usual agreement would be that
the photographer has his/her film costs reimbursed, and of course
his/her name is on the photos as free advertising, and he/she would be
the source of reprints. The photographer will usually have printed
forms for completion. You should arrange for your helpers to handle
the registration and collection to keep costs down. Payments should
be collected in advance. Sample photos with the available animals at
their cutest could help spur sales. Other Options: Let people
bring their own pets for pictures. If your church does a "Blessing of
the Animals," set up a booth to take pictures of those bringing their
pets to be blessed.

Non-Profit In The Spotlight
What do
film-makers, an investment banker, an attorney, a web designer
and an opera director/veterinary technician have in common? We
all share a deep compassion and commitment to helping New York
City street cats. We each feel the frustration that not enough
is being done to help these cats who live in our shadows, feed
on our garbage, scamper for warmth under our cars, barely
surviving on the streets. We know that without sustained efforts
from the community, urban street cats often don’t stand a chance
and so collectively we created the
Urban Cat League. A
few years ago we came together and created a small sanctuary for
street cats in midtown Manhattan. There feral cats can live in a
protected, safe and happy environment. But we realized that we
needed and wanted to do more. In August of 2002, we became a
non-profit corporation, Urban Cat League so we can expand beyond
our tiny sanctuary. Our success at socializing wild street
kittens for adoption has made the demand for our services exceed
the capacity of our sanctuary. |

Holiday Facts
Labor
Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the
labor movement and is dedicated to the social and
economic achievements of American workers. It
constitutes a yearly national tribute to the
contributions workers have made to the prosperity and
well-being of our country. It was hard times in the days
of depression that hit the country in the 1880s. It led
to widespread wage cuts and unemployment in the
traditional pattern of the economic cycle. This was when
the Knights of Labor came into being. It was their
initiative that Labor Day turned out to be a civic event
with parades and meetings. Contrary to the present practice the first
Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5,
1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the
Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second
Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5,
l883. However, it was in l884 when the first Monday in
September came to be selected as the holiday, as originally
proposed. The Central Labor Union urged similar organizations
in other cities to follow the example of New York and
celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea
spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in l885
Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the
country.
