Do-It-Yourself
Fundraiser Of The Month
Chicken Soup Swim:
For a $5 donation to The Good Samaritan Inn in Timmins,
Ontario, participants were given an opportunity to dive into a
94" x 28" swimming pool filled with warm chicken soup and nearly
100 unmarked keys to win a donated 1988 Chevy Silverado. The
rules were simple. In 30 seconds participants must dive into the
pool, fish around for a single key, rush to the vehicle and
attempt to start it up. If it came to a roaring start, the truck
was theirs. People could try for the key as many times as they
wanted, but they had to donate $5 for each try. Participants had
to be at least 18 years old and sign a waiver during
registrations. |

response units and more than 30,000 trained volunteers who pay
their own way and spend approximately six to eight days in
travel and work time before being relieved.

devastated by Hurricane Katrina in the first week alone.

Interesting or Fun Facts
Ivory Soap's most
famous feature, its ability to float, was the result of an accident!
An employee failed to shut off the soap-making machine when he went to
lunch. When he returned, he found the soap mixture puffed-up and
frothy. After consulting with his supervisor, the decision was made to
finish and ship the soap since the ingredients had not been changed in
any way by the longer mixing time. About a month later, P&G received
orders for more of "the floating soap." The people in the Order
Department were perplexed. Only after some detective work was the
mystery solved. The long forgotten lunch-time accident had produced a
floating soap! Today, Ivory floats because we intentionally whip
a small amount of air into Ivory as it's being made. This makes the
soap lighter than water, so it floats.
