Do-It-Yourself
Fundraiser Of The Month
Make Believe
Tea Party: This is an idea that was used by the Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society. No finger sandwiches, crumpets or fine china
necessary! All you need are tea bags, invitations, envelopes and
stamps. The concept: Send an invitation to your friends,
neighbors co-workers, etc. along with a tea bag inviting them to
a "Make-Believe Tea Party" on a certain day (Mother's Day, for
example) at a certain time. Explain that on that date and time,
you will all enjoy a cup of tea (using the tea bag provided) in
support of your cause (or in memory/honor of someone). Remind
them that they can take part in this tea party while still
enjoying the comforts of their own home! Ask each "guest" for a
donation in return for "attending" this tea party. |

People
Animals Love (PAL) brings people and animals together,
brightening the lives of the lonely, easing the pain of the
sick, and enriching the world of at-risk children. Research has
shown that dogs, cats and other companion animals can have
enriching and healthful benefits to at-risk children and
teenagers, the mentally and physically ill, and the elderly in
nursing homes and hospitals. For nearly 25 years, PAL has
spearheaded activities that have improved the lives of thousands
of residents in the metropolitan Washington DC area by bringing
companion animals to those who need them most. |

Interesting or Fun Facts
George de Mestral, a
Swiss engineer, returned from a walk with his dog
one day in 1948 and found some cockleburs clinging to his cloth
jacket. As George picked off the hitchhiking pods from his pants and
the dog's tangled fur coat, he was amazed at their toughness. So he
placed one under a microscope. He was stunned to see that the exterior
of the seedpod was covered with lots of tiny hooks that acted like
hundreds of grasping hands. It took eight years to experiment,
develop, and perfect the invention, which consists of two strips of
nylon fabric which he named Velcro because he liked the sound
of "vel" from velvet and "cro" from the French word "crochet" - which
means hook. |
