Fundraising News From Around the World
Austin, TX: Historic home conducts "goating"
fundraiser to support building expansion. A pair of 3-year-old
pygmy goats were placed on the lawns of homes that were "goated"
and they had to pay $50 to have the animals removed. For a $40
donation residents could request a “goating.” Once
removed, that individual could donate $40 and select a different
target. “Goating insurance” was also available for a $40
donation. Many victims never even saw goats — they paid the
money upfront when notified they were “next.”; Springfield,
MO: Special Olympics unveils newest -- and most extreme --
fundraiser, "Over the Edge," which lets participants rappel from
the rooftop of the State Office Building;
Rockland, ME: Police officers and first responders support
Special Olympics in doughnut eating fundraiser in which
participants were challenged to see who could eat six doughnuts
the fastest; Claremont, OK:
Hospital and Chamber of Commerce sponsor "Boobdazzled
Brassieres," a collection of women's undergarments decorated for
the Bra Art & Auction to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Pieces included a vacation-themed bra ("Vacation or Bust") and
one with a Mardi Gras theme ("Mardi Bra"); Nanaimo, BC: RCMP
officer raises funds for Special Olympics with 48-hour campout
at Wal-Mart on a small platform hoisted high by a scissor-lift;
Santa Cruz, CA: Literacy program hosts Trivia Challenge
fundraiser to support free literacy program;
Nassau
County, FL: Sheriff's office to hold "I Shot with the Nassau
County Sheriff" fundraiser to benefit Cops and Kids;
and New
Bedford, MA: YMCA fundraiser features lobster races.
Students in the metal fabrication department of a local high
school designed and built the structure to race the lobsters.
The structure contained four 5-foot long channels, stepped one
on top of the other. The lobsters were contained by plexiglass
and the channels were filled with salt water.

Do-It-Yourself Fundraiser Of The Month
Goblin Insurance:
Your group can make money prior to Halloween selling "Goblin
Insurance". Here's how it works. Using a computer and a printer you
print up special Halloween Insurance Policies. You charge $5 per
residence policy and $15 per business policy. Here's the good part.
You keep all the money! Your group agrees to clean up any Halloween
mess - soaped windows, etc. made during Halloween night. You do not
agree to repair vandalized items - broken windows - blown up
mailboxes, etc. Most people will think it's a clever idea and will
donate $5. Sell a couple hundred and you have yourself $1000. Your
expense will be the cost of ink and a ream of paper.

Non-Profit In The Spotlight
The
Wounded Warrior Project seeks to assist those men and
women of our armed forces who have been severely injured during
the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other hot spots around
the world. Many of the injuries are traumatic amputations,
gunshot wounds, burns and blast injuries that will retire these
brave warriors from military service. These wounded soldiers
will return to civilian life minus one or more limbs, or with
serious wounds or disfiguring scars, and will face greater
challenges today obtaining assistance and finding opportunities
that would enable them to provide for themselves and their
families. |

Holiday Facts
Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known
as Samhain which was the celebration of the end of the harvest season,
and is sometimes regarded as the "Celtic New Year". Traditionally, the
festival was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of
supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. The ancient Gaels
believed that on October 31st, now known as
Halloween, the boundary between the alive and the deceased dissolved,
and the dead become dangerous for the living by causing problems such
as sickness or damaged crops. The festivals would frequently involve
bonfires, where the bones of slaughtered livestock were thrown.
Costumes and masks were also worn at the festivals in an attempt to
mimic the evil spirits or placate them. The term Halloween is
shortened from All-hallow-even, as it is the eve of "All Hallows'
Day", which is also known as All Saints' Day.
