Interesting or Fun Facts

It all started back in the late 1800's at the Battle Creek Sanatorium — a combination hospital and health spa for the elite and famous where Dr. John Harvey Kellogg was chief physician. Dr. John Kellogg and his brother, W.K. Kellogg wanted to offer something different from the nutritious yet tasteless bread on the sanatorium menu. They began experimenting by running boiled wheat through rollers in search of an alternative. When they were called away from their experiments and had to leave the cooked wheat exposed to the air for a day, the brothers decided to run the wheat through the rollers, despite the fact that it was no longer fresh. Instead of a single, large sheet of wheat that they had been producing, this time the rollers produced a flake for each wheat berry. When baked, they became a light and crisp flake. This flake, similar to breakfast cereal as we know it today, was first formed in 1894. [Source: Kellogg Canada Inc.]
