Do-It-Yourself Fundraiser Of The Month
Truck & Heavy
Equipment Show: Looking for something different? All you need is a
large venue, preferably outdoors in a high traffic area, to bring in
the drive-by crowds. You could raise a lot of money with this simple
idea. Arrange for town workers and private citizens--everyone and
anyone who drives or owns a large truck, emergency vehicle, tractor,
earth mover, etc. to park their vehicle in your field or parking lot
on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. If you don't have a large enough
venue, maybe a local mall will let you use a portion of their parking
lot. Rope off the area and charge admission. Kids of all ages love to
see fire trucks, ambulances, dump trucks, and backhoes up close and
personal. Some proud owners may polish up their vehicles for the
occasion and be willing to stand by to answer the kids questions or
even let them climb in or on the vehicle.
Approach city maintenance departments regarding the temporary loan of
a garbage truck, snow plow, road paving equipment, etc. Ask local
construction companies for a crane or cement mixer. Approach area
farmers or farm equipment dealers for a tractor, combine or other
equipment. You'll want to arrange for at least one eighteen wheeler,
maybe even a moving van. Think delivery trucks, mail truck, UPS, FedEX.
How about a Greyhound or other tourist bus? Is there a military
installation or depot nearby? Ask the ROTC or National Guard to
participate. You might even arrange for a helicopter. See how many
different kinds of vehicles you can muster. The possibilities are
endless! Have a sandwich board by each vehicle, or a large sign or
program passed out at the gate acknowledging the various donors and
thanking them for their participation. You should also send an
individual follow-up thank you to each with information on how much
money you raised and how it will be used.

Non-Profit In The Spotlight
Common Cents is an
educational, not-for-profit organization, which specializes in
creating and managing service-learning programs for young people. Our
most popular and best known program is the Penny Harvest, the largest
child philanthropy program in the United States. Common Cents grew
from the desire of four-year-old, Nora Gross, to feed a homeless man
in 1991. That need led her to ask her father, Teddy Gross, how she
could help. His quest to answer that question gave birth to Common
Cents and the Penny Harvest. And for the past 15 years, children
between the ages of four and 14 have been converting their natural
compassion for others into action by collecting pennies and turning
those pennies into grants for community organizations. The Penny
Harvest shows young people they have the ability to change the world
by introducing them to the power of philanthropy and service during
their formative years. As children help others, they develop their
generosity and moral character, and they learn through practice the
skills and responsibilities of democratic participation.

Is this you? You’re the new fund
raising chairperson. You need to raise
big money for
your group. You have lots of people that say they will
help, but only a handful that you can count on.
We need something “different” and safe, a project where we
don’t risk our own money. It needs to offer our
customers value and be profitable for us. (100% profit
would be nice since we are doing all the work) And, it would
be great to raise the money and have fun doing it. Check out
the “Your Town”-Opoly program at
Pride Distributors.

Holiday Facts
Veteran's Day, also known as Remembrance Day and Armistice Day,
marks the signing of the armistice to signal the end of World War I,
"the War to end all Wars", on November 11, 1918.
Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the
11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German
signing of the Armistice. President Wilson first proclaimed an
Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. In 1953, Al King, a Kansas shoe
store owner who was actively involved with the American War Dads
during World War II, had the idea to celebrate all veterans, not just
those who served in World War I. As a result of his efforts to turn
Armistice Day into "All" Veterans Day, President Eisenhower signed it
into law on May 26, 1954. Congress amended this act on November 8,
1954, by replacing "Armistice" with Veterans and it has been known as
Veterans Day ever since.
