Wheelchair Sports Fundraising Ideas

Pretty much any sport you can think of can be played by wheelchair athletes… not ALL sports, mind you, but more than you might think. There’s wheelchair racing (even cross–country), basketball, (sled) hockey, baseball, soccer, rugby, tennis… the list goes on. Obviously each sport requires its own specialized equipment, even more so when adapted for wheelchair athletes, and that usually means holding a fundraiser to help pay for it all. Whether it’s for an individual athlete or a team, or a whole league, fundraising can be challenging. But these athletes know all about challenges.

One of the biggest decisions is often deciding what type of fundraiser to do. In Santa Clarita Valley, CA, about 150 people turned out to take part in an event, dubbed Wheelchair Sports Day, which featured a variety of wheelchair sports, including basketball, hockey, racquetball, hand cycling and rugby. Proceeds for the fundraising event went to Triumph Foundation. In Canada, Members of the B.C. Wheelchair Sports Association were in Fort St. John schools giving demonstrations on wheelchair athletics. The week of events culminated in a series of wheelchair basketball game fundraisers, in support of the Let’s Play Program. Fundraisers by other Wheelchair Sports teams include basketball games, dinners, donation containers, thons, bake sales, and raffles.
