American Legion Fundraising Ideas

If fundraising for The American Legion is your “job”, then you know how hard it can be. The American Legion is the USA’s largest wartime veterans’ service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans. But in a tough economy, fundraising for ANY organization, no matter how worthy, can be difficult.

One of the biggest decisions is often deciding what type of fundraiser to do. The Stillwater American Legion Post in Stillwater, Minnesota hosts a Spring Pig Roast fundraiser to help with facilities renovation.  The Valhalla American Legion Auxiliary in Mt. Pleasant, New York holds an annual giant tag sale fundraiser to benefit goodie boxes for the troops program and for vets at Montrose VA Hospital. Other American Legion fundraisers include dances, family nights, auctions, raffles, and pancake dinners.

You can also choose from a wide variety of American Legion Post DIY fundraising ideas to supplement your programs. How about a 50/50 raffle, a cookie sale, crock pot cook-off, Scrabble tournament, gas station attendant or thons of every type? Perhaps you can adapt one of these creative DIY fundraiser events to suit your needs:

Flag Subscription Service – This is an ongoing fundraising idea. Basically, it is a service where your group installs a nice national flag in the front yard of the subscriber on each of five or more patriotic days. The flags are put out early in the morning and retrieved in the evening.  Read more…

Movie Night – Many organizations rent a movie and hold movie night fundraising events. This works especially well if you have a large room and projection/large screen TV.  Read more…
