DECA Fundraising Ideas

DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. DECA Chapters nationwide throw fundraisers to send their members on educational trips or to various competitions nationwide.

One of the biggest decisions is often deciding what type of fundraiser to do. In Granby, MO, the East Newton DECA hosted the fourth annual Mr. East Newton Pageant fundraiser. They held a male beauty contest and invited everyone to “Come watch your favorite junior or senior guys strut their stuff in the swimsuit, talent, and best-dressed competition.”  In Davison Twp., MI, a High School teacher became a woman for a day. Another teacher donned a Santa Claus outfit and taught his classes at Davison High School, while a third teacher did the unthinkable — he shaved off his thick mustache of more than 30 years. The staff at Davison High School was not suffering from mass hysteria, but instead many of the teachers were making good on pledges they made in the school’s “This Means War!” fundraiser. DHS’s DECA chapter organized the fundraiser which was a week-long fundraising event in which students put pledge money into bags marked with the names of their favorite teachers. To make the fundraiser even more interesting, many teachers promised to do funny, shocking or embarrassing things to themselves if they were the highest moneymakers. Fundraisers by other DECA chapters include bowling tournaments, product sales, dances, concerts, auctions, work exchanges, and golf outings.

Spirit Chain – This is a great fundraiser for high school students, but could be used with other groups. Have a competition within the different classes in the school (senior, junior, sophomore, freshmen) to see who has the most school spirit. Each class has two colors that their paper chain consists of. Sell each strip of paper for 25 or 50 cents. Read more…

Food Fight – In Lawrence, New Jersey, it was the ultimate food fight, a chocolate lover’s dream and a neat-freak’s nightmare. But for the 670 people who participated, it meant much more. The Lawrenceville School hosted the potentially record-breaking chocolate custard pie fight at a campus field — fittingly called “The Bowl” — hoping not only to earn a spot in the Guinness World Records, but also as a fundraiser for the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK). Read more…

Good Grades – For our group, we do a fundraiser based on each child’s report card. Band members get pledges for A’s & B’s they receive with the proceeds going to our school band. This is an incentive for the kids to make the best possible grades, and at the same time they are earning money for the group. Read more…
