Woonsocket, RI: Organizers of the Athena's Cup launched a national campaign to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness in their attempt to collect 169,000 donated bra's they will use to set a Guinness record for the world's longest chain of attached bras. Athena's Home Novelties, one of the country's premier adult novelty companies has announced bra collection drives at 2010 Pride Events in support of Athena's Cup, a fundraiser sponsored by Athena's which will help to increase breast cancer awareness while attempting to break the current bra-chain Guinness World Record. Funds collected at Pride events will support Athena's Cup, benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Wanakafest, NZ: In 2006, Wanakafest attempted to break the world record for the longest bra chain, but fell short by 107,297 bras. Still they raised more than NZ$10,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Trust charity in the attempt to beat the record. The bra chain, however, did manage to create a distance of 5 kilometers from 7,485 bras collected from all over the world over a period of six weeks. The bras came from such places as United States, United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Australia and from numerous places in New Zealand. 1,000 bras collected in North Hampton, England, courtesy of the BBC, did not count for the final tally. Three sacks full of bras, delivered complete with spiders, cob webs and cockroaches, came from the world-famous Cardrona bra fence in Otago which farmer John Lee had to dismantle after council pressure earlier this year. Wanakafest managed to collect $10,000 for charity by donations sent in with people's bras, bras previously owned by celebrities were auctioned on New Zealand auction site, TradeMe, community fundraisers and an art auction. NOTE:
None of the articles we found on this explained how exactly they
raised funds although as couple mentioned cash donations that came in
with the bra donations. See also: Decorate-A-Bra Fundraiser
We have included a number of do-it-yourself fundraising ideas in this
section such as
a Bra Chain that offer a break from traditional product
sales. They were developed by groups just like yours in an attempt
have a little fun with their fundraiser. Some of them are tried and true
while others show a lot of creativity ... and even wackiness in some
cases. All of them are obviously not appropriate for every group,
but sometimes, with only a little modification, your might find some
fund raising ideas that are perfect for your group. If you have an idea
for a do-it-yourself fund raiser you are willing to share with others,
