Prom Dress Rugby Match Fundraiser

Although some girls might panic about what to wear to their high school prom, a T.C. Williams High School freshman only had a few requirements for her dress. It had to be cheap, ugly and her mother had to be OK with a layer of mud coating it by the end of the night. That’s because for her, prom meant participating in the area’s first “Rugby Prom” -- a game of rugby played by girls in prom dresses. A gathering of girls’ rugby players from local high schools and rugby clubs descended on Lanier Middle School in Fairfax to partake in the area’s first Rugby Prom. T.C. Williams High School rugby coach said the game was designed to help bring awareness about the sport to girls and raise money for local rugby teams.

DIY Prom Dress Rugby Match Fundraiser

After seeing the event on YouTube and hearing about college teams using the prom game format to promote the sport, they decided to give it a go. It was mainly for fun, but it was also a fundraiser to get some money for the Fairfax girls’ rugby club and help promote the sport.   It was just a mix of anyone who wanted to come out and play .. mainly girls from Fairfax and T.C. Williams. Anyone who wanted to come play could for a $5 donation for each player. Wearing dresses and playing rugby didn’t exactly go hand-in-hand, but that was the point.  There were some issues with the dresses. Sometimes it was hard to hit full speed running. There was one moment where a ball went into a girls’ dress and they had to stop playing to find it, but that made it fun.

We have included a number of do-it-yourself fundraising ideas in this section that offer a break from traditional product sales.  They were developed by groups just like yours in an attempt have a little fun with their fundraiser. Some of them are tried and true while others show a lot of creativity ... and even wackiness in some cases.  All of them are obviously not appropriate for every group, but sometimes, with only a little modification, your might find some fund raising ideas that are perfect for your group. If you have an idea for a do-it-yourself fund raiser you are willing to share with others, please send it to us via email. Include anything and everything you would want to know if you were hearing the idea for the first time.
