Ugly Tie Contest Fundraiser

Allow the children and youth of your church to each decorate a man’s neck tie.  Use all sorts of tacky things to glue on the ties… buttons, lace, small toys, flowers, etc. Display the ties in a prominent location in your church.  Put a jar or bucket beneath each tie.  One penny equals one vote.  The tie which receives the most votes at the end of a month is the winner.  The pastor gets to wear the winner.  My husband (our pastor) looked gorgeous this year with his tacky tie. Some Alternatives:

All schools – donate $1 to participate in this contest. Have each homeroom vote on the ugliest tie! Winner gets a homework pass or perhaps a free ice cream at lunch!

Here's a new twist on the old standby Father's Day gift. Give your fathers ties they've worn before and raise money in the process! Ask wives or children to bring in fathers' old ties in advance. Then have kids decorate the ties with glitter paints, sequins, buttons, jewels, and anything else they can find. Then sell the ties for $5 apiece to children and wives for fathers to wear on Father's Day. People don't have to buy the ties they donated. On Father's Day, have an Ugly Tie contest. Ask judges to choose the ugliest tie and give the dad wearing it a plaque with an inscription about the contest.

Company executives wear their ugliest ties and solicit “votes” (a vote is $1) from employees. The person with the most votes (and money in hand) at the end of the day wins the prize. The money raised goes to a charity selected by the employees.

We have included a number of do-it-yourself fundraising ideas in this section that offer a break from traditional product sales.  They were developed by groups just like yours in an attempt have a little fun with their fundraiser. Some of them are tried and true while others show a lot of creativity ... and even wackiness in some cases.  All of them are obviously not appropriate for every group, but sometimes, with only a little modification, your might find some fund raising ideas that are perfect for your group. If you have an idea for a do-it-yourself fund raiser you are willing to share with others, please send it to us via email. Include anything and everything you would want to know if you were hearing the idea for the first time.
