Skip-a-Meal Fundraiser

Eight hundred and eighty students, approximately 11% of the regular diners, skipped a meal around the University of Massachusetts campus as a fundraiser to benefit the victims of the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia. The event occurred at all UMass dining commons and local retail outlets. The price of the meal skipped along with the price of the food that was not produced because of the reduction in students eating at the dining halls, was donated to OxFam, who will use much of the money to provide vaccinations for tsunami victims. The dining halls waited to cook the meal until a little before the students who are not participating arrived so there was not a lot of over-production. Skip a Meal fund-raisers have gained in popularity over the past several years and many universities raise thousands of dollars every year for various causes through this method.

We have included a number of do-it-yourself fundraising ideas in this section that offer a break from traditional product sales.  They were developed by groups just like yours in an attempt have a little fun with their fundraiser. Some of them are tried and true while others show a lot of creativity … and even wackiness in some cases.  All of them are obviously not appropriate for every group, but sometimes, with only a little modification, your might find some fund raising ideas that are perfect for your group. If you have an idea for a do-it-yourself fund raiser you are willing to share with others, please send it to us via email. Include anything and everything you would want to know if you were hearing the idea for the first time.
